How we find, check and order firms

This directory is neutral: no firm pays to be listed, to be placed higher or to be marked as checked. This page sets out the rules every region follows.

How firms are found

We look for firms ourselves rather than waiting for them to apply. Sources include other online directories, map listings, association member lists, lists that firms publish themselves, and the firms AI assistants name when asked the questions buyers ask (our AI answer probe). Each listing records where we first found the firm and on what date.

A source of this kind is where we start, not what we publish. From another directory we take only the firm's name and website, never its text. A firm named in an AI answer is a lead to check, never a fact about the firm. What a listing says comes from the firm's own website or an official register, each with its link and the date we read it.

Verification levels

Levels say how well we know a firm, not how good it is. They are never for sale.

LevelMeaningShown as
ListedExists, basic public details, not yet checked by us"Listed"
CheckedWe verified the key facts against sources, dated"Checked on YYYY-MM-DD"
ConfirmedThe firm itself confirmed or corrected the listing"Confirmed by the firm on YYYY-MM-DD"

Every firm in the directory today (144) is at the first level, listed: nobody has yet checked a listing by hand, and no firm has yet confirmed one.

Every fact on a listing carries its provenance ("From the firm" or "From a public register"), its source link and the date it was read. A check older than 12 months is marked as old. A field we could not source stays empty rather than guessed.

How lists are ordered

The default order is mechanical and the same everywhere: by verification level (confirmed, then checked, then listed), then alphabetically by name. It is never by payment. The firms A to Z page of each region is alphabetical only.

Nothing is paid for

Nothing on the site is paid for or for sale today: not listings, not placement, not levels. If anything paid is ever added, it will be labelled where it appears, it will not change the order of any list, and this page will say so first. We publish no ratings or reviews; if we ever add a score, its method will be published here.

Claiming a profile is free (For firms).

What we fix and what we remove

  • Errors are fixed. Any firm can ask for a correction, free, through the correction page.
  • Any firm can claim its profile, free, to confirm or correct its facts and add its projects.
  • Facts that come from a public record, such as a registration and its status, are not removed because a firm would prefer them gone. They stay, shown with the date they were read.
  • A firm's facts are never removed in exchange for anything.

Photos on profiles

A profile shows at most one kind of picture, in this order, and says which it is:

  • Project photos, only where the firm (or the photographer) has given us permission, credited to the photographer.
  • The firm's own website preview image, the picture its site shares when a link to it is posted. It is labelled with the firm's domain, links to the firm's site and is loaded from the firm's own server; we do not copy it. Only pictures of the firm's work are used, never logos or people.
  • An illustrative photo of the kind of work, licensed from a stock library and labelled "Illustrative photo". It does not show the firm's work.

We do not use firms' logos. Any firm or photographer can ask for a picture to be taken down through the correction page; it is removed within one working day and not shown again.

Law, tax and visas

Pages on law, tax and visas are information, not advice. Each rule cites the regulation or official source it rests on, with the date it was read. A rule we cannot source is not published.

Who runs this

The directory is run by Matthew Downie, who lives in Bali. No payment, and no other dealings with a firm, changes the order of a list, a firm's verification level or what its profile says.

The directory sells nothing today (see nothing is paid for). If that changes, this page will first say who earns from it and how. Questions about any of this can be sent through the correction page.
